The holiday season is almost here, and with it comes family, friends, and lots of good food. It’s easy to get distracted by the celebrations, but remember to at least keep up with basic dental habits! Here are some things to remember as you care for your teeth over the holidays.
Brush: Make sure you brush your teeth twice a day for 2 minutes. Just remember “2 by 2” and you’ll have it down. Brush the inside, outside, and chewing surfaces of each tooth. Replace your toothbrush once every 3-4 months, or sooner if it gets contaminated.
Floss: Use an 18-inch piece of single-filament floss to clean between your teeth. Using a long piece of floss wound between your index fingers makes it easier to reduce cross-contamination between different areas of your mouth.
Chew Gum: Your teeth are more sensitive to abrasion after eating and drinking. Don’t brush right after eating, as that could damage tooth enamel. To get your mouth clean between eating and brushing, chew a piece of sugar-free gum for 20 minutes. This will increase saliva flow and get your teeth ready to be brushed.
Be Mindful of Sweets: Don’t snack on sweets for long periods of time–eat a treat or two, then be done for a while. Drink lots of water to help wash away sugars and acids. Avoid sticky, acidic candies, as they can cause a lot of damage to tooth enamel.
